Waxing & grinding: Wax'n Board maintenance service

Waxing and grinding

As a seasoned snow sports enthusiast, you may already be familiar with some of this. about waxing and sharpening skis. However, these strange techniques can quickly become unclear to novice snowboarders, or occasional skiers.

That is why we tell you in human language what you can expect from proper maintenance at Wax'n Board.

Cleaning

Both a ski and snowboard have a “base” at the bottom that makes contact with snow. This plastic UHMWPE layer contains tiny pores.

When skiing, all the wax disappears from these openings, after which contamination easily takes its place. Of course we don't want that.

Manual

Included with every wax

We roll up our sleeves and brush your snowboard by hand. Not a fun activity and a lot of hard work, but the result is worth it! We choose the right wax brushes from our toolkit based on contamination.

The dirt disappears and as a bonus we also discharge electrostatic energy in this way. You build this up through friction with snow. Small detail for super fast skis!

Chemical

Starter for every new winter season

Resin, tar and, for example, rubber from the “Magic Carpet” are difficult to remove. Still, you want this from your snowboard, or skis, before waxing.

That is why it is important to carry out deep cleaning at least once a winter (preferably at the beginning of winter). With unique balanced chemicals we soak dirt from the deepest point of the pores, where no brush can reach.

Hot scrape

The superior cleaning technique

Unique in Belgium, super popular with “die hard” winter sports enthusiasts. With a Hot Scrape we use ski-friendly cleaning wax for better cleaning.

This is a traditional and labor-intensive technique that comes from top sports, where, in addition to cleaning, we also nourish the base by waxing and cleaning several times with paraffin. For the best gliding ability. Also with older snowboards and skis.

Steel edges

The “edges” consist of 4 places that we need to pay attention to. The side edge is the most well-known. We also have a base edge, contact points and a tip/tail that needs to be updated regularly.

We do this by deburring, grinding and polishing.

Deburring

Necessary for every waxing

A burr is irreversible. You get it on the ski lift during the drumming, or when you slide over a hard object such as a stone.

When deburring we can only remove the protruding metal part. This is necessary to prevent rust and hardening. Of course, this is also important for better plowing through snow and ice.

We manually remove the noticeably rough edges with an Alu Oxide sharpening stone.

Sharpen

Side edge 90~87°, Base edge usually 0°

Maintenance is usually referred to as waxing and grinding. We sharpen a ski on 2 sides; on the side and bottom.

Almost all new skis are cut at 89°, a snowboard at 90°. A sharper angle is always possible: for more grip in, for example, hard icy snow. An irreversible process that is not suitable for beginners or freestyle, for example. In addition, a sharp edge dulls faster, so this does not happen very often.

There is also the technique of overhang grinding, where the base edge will be adjusted somewhere between 0 and -2°. This gives a more surfing feeling that is less likely to bite in the snow. This process is also irreversible, which is why we rarely encounter it, except with, for example, Pros.

Detuning

For carefree turns

At the end of your “effective edge” is a “contact point”. This is the first thing that snow touches when cornering. This way you have 4 points per board or ski.

It prevents chatter and snow chopping when cornering by allowing it to transition gradually. The term “detuning” comes from the freestyle world. It helps with jibbing and, for example, beginners experience more control through this subtle adjustment.

As far as we are concerned, every skier or snowboarder benefits from more comfort, which is why we perform this as standard during sharpening.

Polishing

Super smooth steel edges

The icing on the cake: polishing! After sharpening the skis, we ensure that the steel edge is as smooth as possible. This allows you to maintain very high speeds and plow through snow or ice as if you were going through butter.

We use special diamond files to sharpen the snowboard edges again, from coarse to ultra-fine. Finally, we polish the steel edges with Arkansas stones. Many competitors will be jealous of your perfectly sharpened ski!

Waxing

Since our start-up years ago, we have been a pioneer in ecological wax products. Recently, this has been understood in the snow industry. For example, certain types of wax have now been officially banned, because this, among other things, contaminated drinking water.

When waxing and sharpening snowboard and skis, we therefore use a special blend of wax that provides top performance in almost every situation, even for amateurs going away for a weekend.

Base wax

Necessary for every waxing

At the factory, only a thin layer of wax is applied to a new snowboard. Just enough to make the base shine, not enough for that first ski trip!

Every ski needs a base wax during maintenance; a neutral universal wax with a temperature range of -20 to -10°C.

We do this with the Hot Wax technique. By heating up to around 120°C, wax can penetrate deeply into the base, making it last longer. It is then left to cool overnight for proper processing.

Glide Wax

For better sliding ability

Base wax is like an all-season car tire: not great in the winter, not great in the summer.

That is why we wax with Glide wax from Gallium, or Holmenkol, which is more efficient in specific snow temperatures. E.g. warm (0 -10°C), medium (-5 +4°C) or cold (-25 -10°C). There is also wax for wet or dry snow, but also specifically for indoor or brush tracks.

By talking to our customers about their upcoming holiday in the snow, we can fine-tune which wax we should use.

Unique finish and performance

We apply a Top wax as a final finish. Which? That's our secret: we don't tell you our recipe, because our competitors are reading along, but trust us as a good wax master!

Our customers confirm that this is the best on the market. Extra protection of the wax layer, very high water drainage, top performance, and easy skiing for up to a week.

There is a reason why we are the best location for maintenance (waxing and sharpening) of both snowboard and skis.

Brushing

You have read something about scraping and brushing off wax. This is necessary because too much wax slows down the process. The idea is to only fill pores with wax so that you have a smooth surface to drain water.

With a sharp scraper we remove the excess wax from your ski so that high speeds are achievable. Of course we are careful not to cause damage to your base.

We then brush the snowboard with, among other things: cleaned horsehair and nylon wax brushes. This leaves less than 30% of the used wax.

The result? You are completely ready for the snow!
